All About Cat Breeds

Cats are said to be the most popular tamed animal nowadays. They have been associated with humans for many years. They are valued enormously by people because of its sweet companionship and its capability to hunt vermin and other household pests. Cats are scientifically named as “Felis catus” and commonly named as domestic cats, feral cats, or household cats. According to its history, nobody knows how or when cats first appeared on Earth. However, researchers believe that the most ancient ancestor of cats was probably a weasel like animal known as Miacris which lived for about 40 to 50 million years ago. It is said that cats, specifically African wildcats, were first domesticated by Ancient Egyptians and Mesopotamian farmers to keep grain storage areas free from rodents. Cats are loved not only by Egyptians but by millions of people in the entire world.

Cats vary depending to what breed they belong to. They may come in different shapes and sizes and sometimes categorized into long-haired, short-haired, or even hairless. Here are some cat breeds and its short information.

What are the most popular cat breeds?

Persians

Persians are considered to be the most popular and most recognizable cat breed. Their charisma is emphasized by their long flowing coat and their pansy-like faces. Its name derives from “Persia” which was the former name of Iran, where some believe that similar cats are found. This kind of cat is also called Longhair or Persian Longhair in Britain.

Persian cat characteristics

The Persian has a very long, thick coat, a wide head with ears set far apart, large eyes, short legs and overly shortened snout. It is usually depicted as a quiet cat, homely, has great affection to owners, predictable, extrovert and good in grooming.

Maine Coon

The Maine Coon is one of the oldest natural cat breeds in North America. It is the official state cat to the state of Maine. This type of cat is said to be one of the largest breeds of domesticated cat and considered to be the second most popular cat breed and ranked to be the fifth friendliest cat breed.

Maine Coon cat characteristics

The Maine Coon has been known for its large bone structure, their long flowing coats and rectangular body shape. Their coats are soft and silky and vary in color. It has been recognized due to its intelligence and gentle personality. It is usual for Maine Coon male cats to weigh anywhere between 6.8 kg and 11 kg. For female Maine Coon cats, they weigh between 4.5 kg to 6.8 kg.

Exotic a.k.a Shorthaired Persians

The Exotic Shorthair is a cat breed known as a shorthaired Persian. It is adored by Persian cat lovers since its personalities are similar to Persians. The only difference is that Exotics have a short, dense coat and have less hassle in grooming than the long-haired cats. It ranks to be the second friendliest cats.

Siamese

The Siamese is said to be the royal cats of Siam, former name of Thailand, where they are believed to have originated. It became the Oriental cat breed first distinctly recognized. The Siamese were sacredly tamed by royalties and became watch cats of the temples.

Siamese Cat Facts

Siamese have a slender, flexible, stylish and well-muscled body. It has a triangular head shape and thin snout. Its eyes are oblique and almond-shaped with huge wide ears. It has been described as one of the smartest cats, an excellent jumper and climber and talkative. However, Siamese have a reputation of being the least friendly with strangers.

Abyssinian

Abyssinians are described to be extremely affectionate, vigorous, playful, extrovert and smart. They are known for their curiosity, tend to explore their surroundings and are sensible as they do not tend to take unnecessary risks.
Abyssinians possess a long slim neck, legs and tail with small, oval-shaped paws. They have distinctive coat markings on their heads and have some stripes on their necks or legs. They have a shimmering look due to alternating bands of lighter and darker colors of their thick hairs. Abyssinians are considered to be the friendliest cat, ever loyal and always want to be by your side.

Ragdoll

The Ragdoll is a cat breed known for its quiet and good-natured temperament. It has blue eyes and a different color point coat. According to its history, its breed started in California during the 60s by Ann Baker. Ragdolls possess a soft and silky semi-longhair coat. They may have short legs and a strong, muscular body. Its name derived from the way they go totally limp like a Rag doll when held.

Birman

Birmans are known to be intelligent, often very talkative, playful, easy-going and affectionate cats. They are considered to be a slow to mature breed. Birmans have point colors in their ears, tail, face and feet. They are a medium to heavy weight, silky beautiful long hair and have white gloves on each of their feet.

Oriental

Orientals are said to be a non-pointed version of the Siamese. They have similar personalities to Siamese. The only difference is that it is self-colored. It doesn’t have pointed colors on any part of its body. They are born intelligent, sociable, emotional, and friendly and are quite vocal.

American Shorthair

Originally named as Domestic Shorthair, American Shorthairs are known to be athletic cats. They have broad head, large eyes and medium-sized body with a solid bone structure. They are said to be affectionate and good in relationships with dogs and children.

Tonkinese

Tonkinese is a cross breed of Siamese and Burmese that also have point colors on their body. These cats are known to be playful, active, clever, and demanding breeds and shouldn’t be left alone for long period of time since they get easily bored and feel lonely. As a result, this may lead to unpleasant behaviors.
Those breeds mentioned above are just the top ten most popular cat breeds but actually, there are many remaining types of domestic cats. Some of them are:

Calico

Calico is not a specific breed of cat. However, it is recognized because of its tricolor fur. It is mistakenly term as tortoiseshell cats because of its coat color. Usually, these felines are females due to its genetics. Whether pure bred or not, Calico cats are still lovely and adorable.

Calico cat behaviors include a bit of stubborness and pretty-temperamental, independent, like to be pampered, moody, and often quite fussy. However, if these cats find out that they are being cared and loved, they can be the most harmless and sweet pet you can have.

Savannah

This type of cat is one of the largest domestic cat breeds. It is a hybrid cross between a domestic cat and a serval, a medium-sized, large-eared wild African cat. Savannah cats have long legs, short thick tails, spotted coats, and a small head with a triangular face. They are born to be smart, active, and very aggressive to strangers.

Sphynx

Sphynx is also called Canadian Hairless. They are known to be unusual because of its lack of hair. These cats have wedge-shaped heads and strong, dense bodies. Like other cat types, sphinxes are intelligent, affectionate, energetic, curious and friendly.
No matter how diverse cat breeds are, they still end up possessing admirable behaviors which are reasons why lots of people still adore and choose cats to be their pets.
